With the temperature forecast to plummet to minus 15C (5F) by midweek where there is snow on the ground, rivalling forecasts for parts of northern Norway and Iceland, the Met Office issued its highest level of weather warning for Scotland and Ireland.
The bone-chilling winds are expected to continue battering the United Kingdom this afternoon with Met Office weather warnings remaining in place for the majority of Britain.
The alert is valid between 8am and 11.55pm on Thursday as snow accompanied by strong winds, will lead to the potential for drifting of lying snow.
Travel and public transport disruption is expected, and hundreds of schools across the country have already been closed.
Forecasters predict the snow and freezing temperatures will continue, prompting the Met Office to extend some of its weather warnings.
The red weather warning means that extreme conditions are expected and immediate action should be taken, with many workers across the county sent home this afternoon.
There are also likely to be more delays and cancellations for rail passengers.
Amber snow warnings have been issued for North East England and the central belt of Scotland and will be in place between 10am and 8pm on Thursday.
Mr Snell warned there could be winds of up to 50 to 60mph in southwestern parts of the United Kingdom, bringing about "blizzard-like conditions".

"Long interruptions to power supplies and other utilities are likely to occur, along with possible damage to trees and other structures due to heavy snow or ice".
