Cell phones marijuana blamed for increase in pedestrian deaths
Although reasons for the recent rise have not determine, experts suspect that smartphones and marijuana use are key factors in the deadly trend.
According to GHSA's 2017 data, five states-California, Florida, Texas, New York, and Arizona-account for almost half (43 percent) of all pedestrian deaths, and Arizona had the highest rate of pedestrian fatalities.
Another study has confirmed that US streets are not getting safer for pedestrians.
USA pedestrian deaths numbers reach almost 6,000 in 2017 as walkers and drivers are dangerously distracted, according to a new study. Richard Retting of Sam Schwartz Consulting analyzed the data and authored the report.
About 75 percent of fatalities occurred at night, making "road illumination critical", Retting said.
The reported number of smartphones in active use in the US rose 236 percent from 2010 to 2016, said the report, which cited an increase in "cell phone-related" emergency room visits. At some point in time people both driving vehicles and walking in the street have to take responsibility for their behavior and put down the phone. "We've got distracted drivers and we've got distracted pedestrians, and that is a deadly combination".

Alcohol use is a "clear factor" in the rising death toll, Jonathan Adkins, executive director of the GHSA, told the Journal. Further, as Berman first pointed out, if California was included in the legal weed datasets, the nonprofit's conclusion would have been entirely altered, with little difference between pedestrian death rates in prohibition states versus legal states.
The overall theme of the report is that both drivers and pedestrians are increasingly distracted by their phones, so much so that it's causing more accidents and more deaths.
In fact, the GHSA says it's been more than 25 years since the US has seen this many pedestrian traffic fatalities.
The report added that pedestrian deaths increased by more than 16 percent in the states that legalized recreational marijuana use between 2012 and 2016.
"States like Colorado and Washington, that have legalized marijuana - and of course the District of Columbia, as well - we see deaths went up significantly", Adkins said.
The National Safety Council said it is discouraged by the second consecutive year of record-high numbers of pedestrian deaths. The city of Montclair, Calif., recently banned walking across the street while using a phone or headphones.
