Researchers identify over 500 genes related to intelligence

DNA tests can predict intelligence, scientists show for first time

Using the heaps of data gathered by the UK Biobank, scientists at the University of Edinburgh, the University of Southampton, and Harvard University compared DNA variants in over 248,000 people from across the world. Even so, to a small extent, this is the first time that scientists have said they were able to predict the intelligence index, based on a sample of saliva or blood taken to analyze genetic material.

The study - the largest of its kind - could lead to new treatments for Alzheimer's disease. Some of these genes have already been linked to other things, such as longevity.

Previous studies have suggested that between 50 per cent and 75 per cent of intelligence is inherited, and the rest comes through upbringing, friendship groups and education.

"We know that environments and genes both contribute to the differences we observe in people's intelligence", Professor Ian Deary, Principal Investigator, added.

The book also deals with the relation of art in a person's journey to finding the identity and the danger of conforming to rules. Ng's book follows the story of the Richardson family whose lives are disrupted by the arrival of a mother and daughter.

The findings published in Molecular Psychiatry shed fresh light on the biological building blocks of people's differences in intelligence.

In the largest ever study looking at the genetic basis for intelligence, researchers at the University of Edinburgh and Harvard University, discovered hundreds of new genes linked to brain power. When they analysed the DNA of a group of different people, the team were only able to predict 7 per cent of the intelligence differences between those people. Children who grow in a safe, nutritious environment without being exposed to high levels of pollution and who are treated with many stimuli perform better in clever tests and a higher IQ score.

Earlier this year it was reported 52 genes linked to intelligence had been uncovered following a similar study of over 78,000 individuals.
