Elsewhere, world number one Roger Federer booked his place in the third round with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory over Argentina's Federico Delbonis.

Federer and 10th seed Djokovic both came into the tournament seeking to become the first six-time victor of the event.

As for Djokovic, the question now is whether he will play in Miami later this month.

Djokovic took six months off after Wimbledon past year and returned in January's Australian Open where he lost in the fourth round. He suffered his first opening-round loss in the California desert since his debut in 2006.

"For me it felt like first match I ever played on the tour", Djokovic said afterward.

"I just completely lost rhythm, everything, struggled a little bit with the health the last couple of weeks".

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly".

Sathyaraj to get a 'Kattappa' wax statue at Madame Tussauds in London

Lock, who is on a tennis scholarship at UNLV, also revealed how the opportunity to train with the star trio came about and how it has inspired him ahead of his upcoming matches. He denied a set point while serving down 2-5 in the opener and immediately broke the former World No. 1 in the next game, firing a backhand victor down the line and a forehand pass off a poor smash. His backhand, traditionally his most consistent and game-breaking weapon, bled errors-32 in all.

Daniel, who reached the second round with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory over Britain's Cameron Norrie, had never beaten a top-20 opponent before Djokovic, and needed to win a pair of qualifiers to enter the main draw of the tournament. The 30-year-old committed 61 unforced errors in the two-and-a-half hour match.

For Daniel, a third-round meeting with world No. 47 Leonardo Mayer awaits.

Daniel, without any major wins on his record, beat Djokovic 7-6 (3), 4-6, 6-1 after two-and-half hours of torment for the Serbian, who gave the feeling of not being comfortable on the court at all.

Israeli Dudi Sela beat British 21st-seeded Briton Kyle Edmund 6-4 6-4 while Luxemburg's 24th seed Giles Muller was upset by Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 7-5.

Roger Federer has warned the rest of the ATP Tour that Novak Djokovic "is going to get better" despite the Serb falling at the first hurdle at Indian Wells.

While Federer was far from ideal, he did improve to an unblemished 13-0 on the year and took the next step in snaring his third title of the young season. Earlier in the day, Feliciano Lopez dismissed wild card Ernesto Escobedo 6-4, 6-3 and awaits either eighth seed Jack Sock or Italy's Thomas Fabbiano.
