Ronald Gasser will spend the next 30 years in prison for the death of former John Curtis Christian School and National Football League standout Joe McKnight.
Gasser was convicted in January and awaits sentencing on a manslaughter charge.
Defense lawyers argued he fired in self-defense when McKnight approached his vehicle following the chase, which spanned the Mississippi River in New Orleans and later ended with gun violence in nearby Jefferson Parish.
The now prisoner shot McKnight three times in a road rage incident in December 1, 2016.
"Let this be a cautionary tale to all driver who rage behind the wheel of their vehicle at other drivers", the judge said at the sentencing.
Gasser, who felt challenged, followed McKnight off the bridge at the General de Gaulle exit and the two engaged in a five-mile pursuit during which they sped alongside one another, give each other the finger and yelled obscenities through their open windows.

"My child", McKnight's mother, Jennifer McKnight, sobbed as she stood facing Gasser in the courtroom during victim impact statements Thursday morning.
Gasser, who is 56, claimed during his trial that he shot McKnight in self-defense after a confrontation on a roadway near New Orleans. A prosecutor argued that Gasser has shown no remorse.
McKnight was a high school star at Louisiana's John Curtis Christian School and signed with the University of Southern California in 2006 as one of the elite running back recruits in the nation.
