The controversial search of a Russian plane by British officials at Heathrow Airport was conducted to protect the United Kingdom from organized crime and the smuggling of harmful substances, the United Kingdom security minister has said.

Reacting to the development, the Russian embassy in a statement said; "Border Force and Customs officers have searched the aircraft that was conducting the Aeroflot flights 2582 / 2583, Moscow - London - Moscow".

Vitaly Mitrofanov, the captain of the Aeroflot crew said upon arrival in Moscow the British security officials had looked for the objects banned for transportation. If London does not provide an explanation, Russian Federation will reserve the right to apply similar actions to British airlines.

Britain said Saturday that border officials had searched an incoming Aeroflot plane, a move Russian Federation called an act of "blatant provocation" in the ongoing diplomatic spat between London and Moscow.

The reports come the same day Russia served expulsion notices to dozens of staff from Western embassies in a diplomatic tit-for-tat ignited by the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia.

"Once these checks were carried out the plane was allowed to carry on with its onward journey".

Moscow has denied it was behind the attack and has called on Britain to prove it did not itself poison Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter.

The Russian Embassy in London tweeted that it insists "on the right to see" Ms Skripal, who is a Russian citizen.

On Saturday, Russia's Transport Ministry also said it wanted to know what had happened.

The British ambassador to Russia was told to cut staffing levels to the size of the Russian delegation in the UK.

The ministry informed ambassadors of 23 countries of its decision to expel employees of their diplomatic missions in Russian Federation in a tit-for-tat response to the recent hostile actions by their countries against Moscow.

In total, 171 people are expected to leave the country, with two Russian planes laid on, one of which will make a brief stopover in NY to collect 14 families.
