The diplomats were expelled over the poisoning in Britain of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

Emerging from the building, German ambassador Rudiger von Fritsch said that Russian Federation had to answer questions about the poisoning of the ex-spy, Sergei Skripal, but that Berlin was open to dialogue with Moscow.

Russian officials also announced on Thursday that it will expel 65 diplomats from European Union countries as well as eight other countries, including Canada, Australia and Norway.

The Kremlin said today it was not Russian Federation that had unleashed a diplomatic war with the West following the mass expulsion of United States envoys in retaliation against coordinated moves by Britain and its allies over a spy poisoning.

US President Donald Trump has emphasised the need to keep trying to work with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite increasingly tense relations between the two countries.
