Russians compromised election systems in seven US states

Earlier this month, the agency pushed back against a report from the news outlet that claimed Russian hackers had "successfully penetrated" US voter systems before the election.

"All state and federal officials who spoke to NBC News agree that no votes were changed and no voters were taken off the rolls", that paragraph said.

Three senior intelligence officials told NBC News, as of Jan 2017, the states included were Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin.

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security didn't elaborate on the other targeted states.

NBC reported the USA intelligence community, in this case, defines "compromised" as actual entry into election websites, voter registration systems and voter look-up systems. The discrepancy shows the lack of coordination between local and federal officials on defending against cyber attacks.

Election officials are "constantly" updating their technology and equipment, and starting this year, state employees are required to undergo annual cybersecurity training from the Department of Innovation and Technology, which is focused on preventing phishing attacks like the ones used against Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta. Along with Florida, they were Alaska, Arizona, California, Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin.

"They are secure. It's an important time, and we don't want to deter people from going to the polls because they feel their vote isn't secure", said Trisha Robertson with the Collier Election Office.

From the beginning, the Wisconsin Elections Commission has maintained that there's never been a successful hacking attempt on its systems.

Six of the seven states deny they were breached, based on their own cyber investigations, NBC News reports.

The Department of Homeland Security says that it is working with states and localities to protect voting systems, but the timeline laid out by NBC News - and the discrepancies between the states and federal government - isn't exactly reassuring as the 2018 midterm election approaches. "We believe tonight's story to be factually inaccurate and misleading", a DHS statement said, dismissing the report.

"As we have consistently said, DHS has shared information with affected states in a timely manner, and we will continue to do so", said the spokesman, Tyler Houlton.

This is not the first NBC News report on possible Russian hacking that has drawn fire from DHS.

"In no case is there any evidence that votes were changed or that Russian actors gained access to systems involved in vote tallying", he said.
