Turkey responds to Putin's statement on Eastern Ghouta

In one of the fiercest onslaughts of Syria's seven-year civil war, hundreds of people have died in 11 days of bombing of eastern Ghouta, a swathe of towns and farms outside Damascus that is the last major rebel-controlled area near the capital.

The only civilians believed to have fled the enclave since the "pause" took effect are an elderly Pakistani couple who had remained in Ghouta throughout the seven-year conflict but made a decision to leave when the violence increased.

CBS News went to one of four humanitarian corridors set up to allow aid in to rebel held territory, and let civilians out.

AFP reporters saw no movement at the Wafideen checkpoint through which would-be evacuees were told to exit the Eastern Ghouta enclave that the government lost in 2012 and has besieged nearly ever since. During the third daily humanitarian pause the militants' attacks were repelled three times by Syrian government forces, according to the Russian military.

The director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdurrahman, said about five shells from government areas fell on the enclave.

A top United Nations aid official says five-hour daily pauses in fighting in Syria's embattled eastern Ghouta region laid out under a "unilateral" plan by Russian Federation are not enough.

UN Security Council Resolution 2401, passed on February 24, demands a "durable humanitarian pause for at least 30 consecutive days throughout Syria, to enable the safe, unimpeded and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid and services and medical evacuations of the critically sick and wounded". They had been unable to contact the Pakistani embassy."He went on to say, "So I posted about it on this page, which, thanks to you, went viral and caught the attention of a woman whose father is a former ambassador and foreign secretary".

The UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura meanwhile said the UN would "not give up in asking for the full implementation of the resolution 2401". The ceasefire does not apply to members of the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), Al-Nusra Front or any other terrorist organizations.

"The enemies can not do a damn thing if we fulfil our duty", Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was quoted by state television as saying. In particular, these steps include airstrikes against the Syrian government. But no humanitarian aid has gone in and no civilians have left.

Egeland also said the UN Security Council resolution over the weekend calling for a 30-day ceasefire had done little to improve the situation in Eastern Ghouta. "Hospitals have been hit and people can't get anything to eat", he said.

"We will continue asking until we are red in the face, blue in the face, for both sides.to stop shelling each others' areas, and for convoys to be allowed" in, he told reporters in Geneva. They need intensive care units.
