Russia will shutter the U.S. consulate in St. Petersburg after the U.S. shut down a Russian consulate in Seattle
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced earlier on Thursday to expel 60 USA diplomats and close United States consulate in St. Petersburg in tit-for-tat retaliation for Washington's moves against Moscow over an alleged ex-spy poisoning incident.
Russian Federation said on Thursday it was expelling 60 USA diplomats and would eject scores from other countries that joined London and Washington in censuring Moscow over the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter, something Moscow denies.
In the assassination attempt, which took place on March 5 in a park in Salisbury, southern England, the former spy Skripal, his daughter and a policeman who was involved in locating the source of the poison were affected.
Two dozen countries - including the USA, many European Union nations, and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members - then ordered about 150 Russian diplomats to leave in a show of solidarity with Britain.
Mr Lavrov said the USA ambassador had been informed of the "retaliatory measures", including "the expulsion of the equivalent number of diplomats and our decision to withdraw permission for the functioning of the United States consulate general in Saint Petersburg".
According to their officials and state broadcasters, Germany and Poland would be sending home four diplomats each, the Czech Republic and Lithuania three each, and Italy, Spain, Albania and Denmark would all have two expelled.
