Protests erupted in Sacramento after police killed Stephon Clark, with demonstrators shutting down major streets and a highway, a city council meeting and two games of the United States professional basketball team the Sacramento Kings. All but a few thousand people were prevented from watching both games, leading the team and city to go to great lengths to prevent a similar situation from reoccurring Thursday night, when the Kings face the Indiana Pacers.

Four days after the shooting, hundreds of angry protesters took to the streets, chanting, "Stephon Clark, say his name" and "Black lives matter", as they marched onto Interstate 5 and then proceeded to the Golden 1 Center, home to the National Basketball Association's Sacramento Kings. Kings players Vince Carter and Garrett Temple were scheduled to participate.
