The WHO says the next big outbreak will be something we have not seen before
Scientists warn that an unknown "Disease X" poses a major health risk and could cause a "serious worldwide epidemic" in the future.
During the recent meeting which was held in Geneva, the World Health Organization added Disease X into their Blueprint Disease list as the 9 decease that may cause a worldwide outbreak. It also highlights diseases where there are now no cures of effective preventative measures. According to WHO, "Disease X" will be caused by a pathogen which is not yet identified to cause human diseases. And the creation a year ago in Canada of horsepox - a close relative of the deadly smallpox virus - has heightened fears that Disease X could come out of a renegade laboratory.
Rottingen, who believes Disease X is more likely to occur naturally rather than be man-made, added that it could emerge from a zoonotic disease - one that is spread from animals to humans, such as swine flu.
Since January, Lassa fever has been linked to 1,081 suspected cases and more than 70 deaths in Nigeria and has also spread to Benin, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Furthermore, there is need for drugs and vaccines to improve dramatically, while additional research will help the fight against the diseases.

Termed as "The known unknown", Disease X is the next potential epidemic threat to the humankind, the World Health Organization warns the world. These include Severe Fever with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (SFTS), emergent non-polio enteroviruses including EV71, D68 and Chikungunya.
"Disease X represents the knowledge that a serious global epidemic could be caused by a pathogen now unknown to cause human disease, and so the R&D Blueprint explicitly seeks to enable cross-cutting R&D preparedness that is also relevant for an unknown "Disease X" as far as possible", said World Health Organization in a statement.
Every year, the World Health Organization publishes an annual Blueprint review that lists diseases and pathogens to prioritise for research and development. "Efforts in the interim to understand and mitigate them are encouraged". How do you protect yourself against getting ill?
