Scientists solve mystery of why our knuckles crack

But when Barakat along with one of his student who actually thought of such project came to the conclusion that such high-speed process of cracking knuckles can not be studied with current imaging techniques since the process is quite fast.

What scientists have agreed upon, however, is that knuckle cracking is not something everyone is able to do, not every finger can produce the popping sound, and it takes about 20 minutes before a knuckle can be cracked again.

Earlier studies using ultrasound had reached a similar conclusion linking the sound to changes in pressure in the joint fluid. It's a question researchers have been asking for 60 years, but one new study may have finally cracked the case.

By contrast, Barakat says formation of bubbles has not been shown to produce sounds of the observed magnitude or loudness.

The team compared the sounds they would expect from collapsing bubbles produced from joint-popping, according to the model, with sound patterns recorded from a handful of knuckle-cracking participants, and found a good match between the two.

Some researchers have suggested that it is the collapse of such bubbles, formed of carbon dioxide and other gases, that causes the well-known crack, but others have proposed another possibility.

Epic Games revealed in a previous Reddit post that the Jetpack launch had been delayed due to a "last minute design issue" . The medium to long range gun has no scope and only holds one round, it can be found as both uncommon and rare.

Suja set out to investigate the knuckle-cracking conundrum after researchers from the University of Alberta in Canada reported that they'd put an expert knuckle cracker in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine and watched the process in real time. The sound comes from the partial collapse of little gas bubbles in joint fluid, researchers report today (March 29) in Scientific Reports.

In terms of limitations, Bakarat said his team made a number of assumptions in the study, including the presence of only a single bubble, that the bubble is perfectly spherical, that the joint has an idealised, common shape, among others. When you force the knuckles apart, pressure drops which leads to the formation of many bubbles. This is something a group of scientists believes, however, some scientists suggest that when these bubbles collapse, it produces the popping sound with which, everyone is familiar. They also add that the study is limited because they did not come up with a model for the formation of the bubbles.

Author of the 2015 research aforementioned, Dr. Greg Kawchuk welcomed the new findings with the fact that the thing that interests him is that such events can happen between the frames of an MRI video.

Previous research remained inconclusive, and due to the variations in people's joints, it seemed like that uniform cracking noise would remain a mystery forever. It did state that there would need to be further research on the subject to determine whether there are long-term effects caused by cracking knuckles.

So for you knuckle crackers out there, you probably don't have to worry about contracting arthritis or anything like that, but just remember that many of us non-knuckle crackers find your habit to be absolutely revolting.
