
Buhari rejects amended electoral Act
President Buhari in a letter dated 3 March 2018 addressed to the Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, told the lawmakers why he declined to assent to the bill.
"Nearly a decade later, there has been no legislative action on these aspects of the recommendations of the Uwais and Lemu reports, making the present effort by the Senate and the concurrent effort by the House of Representatives a welcome development".
President Muhammadu Buhari, has written to the National Assembly to withhold assent to the amendment of the 2010 Electoral Act.
"The amendment to Section 152 Subsection 325 of the Principal Act may raise Constitutional issues over the competence of the National Assembly to legislate over local government elections".
He disclosed that the electoral umpire now had about 1,080 cases in courts relating to the 2015 general elections, adding that the commission had received 124 case files of electoral offenders from the police, out of which 60 had been prosecuted.
"Please accept Distinguished Senators, the assurances of my highest consideration".
"The primaries of political parties shall follow the following sequence (i) State House of Assembly (ii) National Assembly (iii) Governorship, and (iv), President".

The two chambers of the National Assembly on February 14, 2018 adopted the conference report of Electoral Act amendment which altered the sequence of elections in the country.
The House said it would remain firm on the bill, especially the provision on the re-ordering of the 2019 elections.
This is contained in a Bill seeking to establish the National Electoral Offences Commission, now being processed for passage by the Senate Committees on INEC and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
"In 2015 general election, INEC has been dragged to court 680 times".
He stated that the section guaranteed the INEC to organise, undertake and supervise all the elections as provided in Section 15 (a) of the Third Schedule to the Constitution.
"The bill when passed into law will not only ensure speedy & effective prosecution of electoral offenders, it will also enable INEC to focus and prioritise on its other extensive responsibilities as an Election Management Body (EMB)". It is against all known laws of the land. "But you understand the tendency of the average Nigerian politician, they politicise everything".
