Leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee suspect House Republicans leaked to conservative media text messages between the panel's top Democrat and a lobbyist he hoped could connect him with the author of a dossier alleging President Donald Trump has ties to Russian officials, according to people familiar with the matter.

Earlier this month, Fox News published text messages between Warner and Hillary Clinton-connected lobbyist and lawyer Adam Waldman.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Mark R. Warner, D-Va., recently raised with Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., their concerns about what appear to be leaks from the House Intelligence Commitee, these people said. Mark Warner and a USA lawyer with ties to Russia, The New York Times disclosed Thursday.

"A lawyer for Mr. Waldman independently concluded that the House committee had probably shared the document and sent a letter to (House Intelligence Committee chairman Republican Devin)".

Warner exchanged texts with Waldman in trying to contact former British spy Christopher Steele, the person who gathered the so-called Trump dossier, the report added.

The documents containing the texts were leaked just days after one of Nunes' staff members asked the Senate committee to share copies of the exchange with the House committee, one source said. Taken together, the actions suggested a pattern of partisanship and unilateral action by the once-bipartisan House panel.

In his meeting with the senators, Ryan made clear that he heard their complaints but noted that he did not run the committee himself, officials briefed on the encounter told the New York Times.

"The New York Times, a prominent purveyor of leaks, is highlighting anonymous sources leaking information that accuses Republicans of leaking information", spokesperson Jack Langer told the Times.

Nunes drafted and pushed for public release a controversial memo last month accusing the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation of impropriety in their separate probe into the Russian meddling and possible connections to President Donald Trump's campaign.

To the senators, who are overseeing what is effectively the last bipartisan investigation on Capitol Hill into Russias interference in the 2016 election, the leak was a serious breach of protocol and a partisan attack by one intelligence committee against the other.

Burr and Warner told the Times in a joint statement that they did meet with Ryan but did not request any specific action.
