Global cues to drive mkts in holiday-shortened week

The volatility extended on selling by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) amid weakness in Asian markets on trade war concerns.

In the global markets, Japan's Nikkei erased earlier losses of 1.3 per cent to end 0.7 per cent higher, while MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.4 per cent, flipping back to positive territory from a 0.5 per cent fall.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on Friday that could impose tariffs on up to $60 billion of imports from China, although the measures have a 30-day consultation period before they take effect. Australian shares declined 0.5 per cent to their lowest since early October. The broader indices Nifty Mid-cap and Small-cap slipped 1.46% and 2.17%, respectively.

The brokers said Fears of a full-blown trade war dampened investor sentiment here.

The Nifty50 closed below the 10,000-points-level, declining by 116.70 points or 1.15 per cent at 9,998.05 points, while the BSE Sensex closed at 32,596.54 points - down 409.73 points or 1.24 per cent.

MMTC Ltd climbed 10 percent while State Trading Corp of India Ltd rose 5 percent after commerce and industry minister Suresh Prabhu said that a merger of the state-run commodity trading firms was on the cards, according to a Mint daily report that cited PTI.
