Last week, Pakistan's Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz Sharif from the post of PML-N party chief, saying all decisions made by him now stand null and void.
Pakistan's ruling party Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) on Tuesday elected former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as its "leader for life" days after the Supreme Court disqualified him as party head. "We stand united. PMLN stands united".
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party also elected Nawaz as "leader for life", in what will be seen as a provocative move and could anger the judiciary after last week's Supreme Court verdict that removed Sharif as party leader.
Observers believe Nawaz's removal from the party post could impact the PML-N's campaign for the general election to be held by the middle of this year. But he designated current prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as the interim, noting that his sibling must first be elected to the National Assembly before taking the top office. In 2006, he was again elected as the party president.
Maryam Nawaz confirmed the development in a tweet as the PML-N Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting was underway at the Sharif family's Model Town residence in Lahore.

The meeting also approved making Nawaz PML-N top leader for lifetime and also paid tributes to his service for the party, country and democracy. Earlier, there were speculations by some circles that former prime minister might nominate his own wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz for the coveted slot.
