The airport had hoped to reopen its runway after snow clearing and deicing this morning, but this has been pushed back until the afternoon. Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are advising customers not to travel to the airport today.

British Airways said the "very poor" weather conditions will continue to affect some of its flights.

EasyJet intend to start departures from Edinburgh from noon, while Ryanair will open flights out of the Capital from 1pm.

Aer Lingus and Ryanair have announced that all flights in and out of Ireland after 3pm today are cancelled until Saturday.

"However there were significant cancellations and delays due to the impact of adverse weather here and also at a number of airports in Britain and in continental Europe".

Some flights from Cork and Dublin today have already been cancelled and further delays and cancellations are expected...

A spokeswoman for the airline said: "Due to the adverse weather that is being experienced and forecasted over the next few days with the potential to impact travel across large parts of the United Kingdom, airports may either close temporarily or restrict the number of arriving and departing flights".

"We are doing everything we can to re-accommodate customers and we apologise for any inconvenience caused by these disruptions which are entirely outside our control", the company said.

Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy said if a status red warning was issued it would lead to "automatic schools closure", and the situation was being kept under close review.

The official advice is to check with National Rail Enquiries or the train operator before travelling. The weather in Scotland has been particularly harsh by United Kingdom standards.

Further snow is forecast during the day which will make travel conditions to and from the airport extremely challenging.

Motorists have also been urged not to travel.
