Shehu Sani to FG Ask UK UAE to publish names of Nigerians with properties abroad
Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, Mr Femi Falana has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to stop payment of double salary and allowances to legislators in the light of revelations that a senator collects N13.8m monthly as running cost.
Reacting on yesterday, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, said there was nothing new about what Sani declared.
He said, "Almost all holders of elective and appointive offices have running costs allocated to their offices and that can not be said to be part of their salaries".
In the current edition of The News magazine, Senator Shehu Sani made a disclosure which has serious implications for public accountability in Nigeria. "According to the Senator, the running cost of each Senator is N13.1 million in addition to a consolidated salary of N750,000 per month".
He also dismissed reports that senators were unhappy with Sani.
"Senator Shehu Sani has in a rare moment of penance for the financial rascality of our National Assembly done partial DISCLOSURE on their GOOD LIFE at the expense of the POOR".

Sani's revelation remained the first by a lawmaker from the Senate since the clamour by many for a full disclosure of lawmakers' earnings.
In a recent interview, Sani said: "The constituency project itself is given on a zonal basis and nearly every senator will go with a constituency fund of about N200 million, but it is not the cash that is given to you".
He did admit that there is no specific instruction on the running cost paid to the Senators.
But in an interview with BBC, he said he his prepared to face the backlash of his revelation.
He, however, kicked against allowances, advocating that Senators should only be paid salaries.
"However, the federal legislators can not be blamed alone for paying themselves skyrocketing salaries and allowances outside the ambit of the wages approved for all political office holders in the country".
