A Peace Rally was held Sunday at Chancellors Run Regional Park in Great Mills, Maryland to remember the life of 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey, who died Thursday night in the hospital after she and two other people were shot at Great Mills High School in St. Mary's County on Tuesday.
The student used his father's Glock handgun, a weapon the sheriff's office said was legally purchased.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said school resource officer, Deputy 1st Class Blaine Gaskill, responded immediately and engaged the shooter.
Gaskill's role in confronting the shooter also thrust the high school located about 70 miles south of Washington, D.C., into the national gun control debate and discussions over whether schools should arm teachers or add more armed security on campuses.
Austin Rollins entered Great Mills High School just before 8 a.m. on March 20th, firing a single shot at Jaelynn Willey, 16.
Barnes was released from the hospital a day after the shooting after suffering non-life-threatening injuries. "My daughter was hurt by a boy who shot her in the head and took everything from our lives", she said.
As the call was taking place, a staff member can be overheard on the school's PA system urging all students to get into a classroom.
"We have help coming to you", the dispatcher told him.

The tapes include a call to dispatchers from Barnes, who had taken shelter in a classroom after being struck in the leg. "I don't know if there is a gun, but there is a girl outside the door bleeding on the ground".
"How many shots were fired?" a dispatcher asked.
