Sierra Leone court upholds injunction to delay election run-off

Tensions have risen in the nation of 7 million people after neither the ruling All Peoples Congress party candidate nor the leading opposition candidate won the first round outright.

The court, had on Saturday ordered the electoral commission to halt preparations for a March 27 presidential run-off following a legal filing by a lawyer linked to the ruling party.

A group of civil society organisations said Saturday the court decision was "frustrating and depressing", as the March 7 vote had been declared credible by national and worldwide observers. In its interim report presented to the media on 9th March, EISA 2018 also observed that voter turnout was impressive while the conduct of polling personnel was professional.

"Regardless of their ethnic group, religion, gender, or physical ability, the NEC will enable the people of Sierra Leone to exercise their constitutional right to participate in political decision making, in an environment of peace", the statement, signed by NEC chairman Mohamed Nfa Allie Conteh, read.

The March 7 polls were the poverty-stricken West African nation's first general election since it emerged from two major crises: a 2014-16 Ebola outbreak that killed nearly 4,000 people and deadly mudslides that buried hundreds of people in 2017.

"The EISA EOM is of the view that the process up until the end of the first day of tallying has so far been conducted substantially in line with sub-regional, continental and worldwide standards although there is room for improvement especially in the legal framework to further level the playing field".

No presidential candidate received the 55% of the vote required to win in the first round.

APC's Samura Kamara will face off with the main opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP)'s Julius Maada Bio in the elections.
