"Growing up in Te Atatu with a Pakeha mum and Maori dad, I never thought I'd have this opportunity to make such a difference to the lives of New Zealanders", says Simon, who is the 12th leader of the National Party and its first leader of Maori descent.

Simon says in the coming weeks there will be "reshuffle" in caucus, while he will ensure New Zealanders get to know him better and the direction he intends to take the National Party.

The Taurangi MP went into today's vote looking about even with Amy Adams to replace Bill English in the job, with Judith Collins, Steven Joyce and Mark Mitchell considered only outside possibilities. There were two ballots and Mr Bridges won on the second.

He thanked Mr English, and said the party was "truly" blessed to have such good candidates. Of course, with Bridges taking a fairly significant position in New Zealand politics, many people are likely wondering exactly how old the new party leader is.

"I look forward to working alongside Simon Bridges and Paula Bennett and continuing to advocate for the issues which matter in Pakuranga".

In a statement on Twitter, Simon Bridges shared his ambitions. That gives me great confidence.

He was also pleased Paula Bennett will continue on as deputy leader which would provide National with a "talented and experienced" leadership team.

Bridges was first elected to parliament in 2008, the same year as prime minister Jacinda Ardern, and held the labour, energy, economic development and transport portfolios during the party's decade in power.
