Skin bacteria could help protect against cancer: research

Common skin bacteria found to produce skin-cancer killing molecule

A skin producing bacteria can help individuals protect against skin cancer, a new study suggests. The scientists described that a specific bacteria strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis secretes a chemical that eliminates harmful bacteria which have been depicted as responsible for infections.

"We have identified a strain of Staphylococcus epidermidis, common on healthy human skin, that exerts a selective ability to inhibit the growth of some cancers", says Richard Gallo, one of the authors on the study.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego exposed mice with tumors to Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria and found that a molecule produced by the bacteria stopped the tumors from growing.

"This unique strain of skin bacteria produces a chemical that kills several types of cancer cells but does not appear to be toxic to normal cells", he told MedicalNewsToday. "In fact, we previously reported that some bacteria on our skin produce antimicrobial peptides that defend against pathogenic bacteria such as, Staph aureus", said Dr Gallo.

When the team investigated further, they found that 6-HAP blocked the activity of DNA polymerase, an enzyme required for the formation of DNA.

According to Dr Gallo, 6-HAP prevents tumor growth by inhibiting DNA synthesis.

The skin bacteria is called the Propionibacterium acnes and is producing a protein named RoxP which has the role to shield skin cells against what is known as oxidative stress - a condition in which the cells are damaged and can transform into cancer cells.

Mice that received intravenous injections of 6-HAP every 48 hours over a two-week period experienced no apparent toxic effects, but when transplanted with melanoma cells, their tumour size was suppressed by more than 50 percent compared to controls.

Perhaps, the research findings of this study is bit different from the previous research.

Co-program leader and professor of microenvironment, metastasis and immunology, Ashani Weeraratna from the Wistar Institute's Melanoma Research Center, Philadelphia stated that, "It's clear that an understanding of the microbiome - the bacterial landscape, so to speak - is critical to harness the full potential of some of the outstanding immunotherapy we have available to treat cancers, like melanoma". "The next stage of this exciting work, will be to translate it to human clinical trials and show that this bacterially produced chemical can protect the host from skin cancers".
