Tens of thousands of Slovaks rallied on Friday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Robert Fico’s government

On Friday, an estimated 50,000 people rallied in Bratislava and thousands more in other cities to call on Slovakia's Prime Minister, Robert Fico, to dismiss his closest ally, Robert Kalinak.

The Most-Hid (Bridge) group, Fico's junior partner in the government, has demanded Fico dump Interior Minister Robert Kalinak by March 12.

Slovakian Interior Minister Robert Kalinak announced on Monday would resign from his post amid the crisis following the slayings of an investigative journalist and his fiancee.

Mr Kalinak, 46, was the second minister to resign after the contract-style killing of Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kusnirova, both aged 27, at their home last month. The party welcomed Kalinak's resignation although its leader, Bela Bugar, declined to comment when asked whether it would be enough to remain in the coalition.

The street demonstrations, meanwhile, have turned into protests over allegations of persistent corruption.

Over the weekend, tens of thousands of protesters in Bratislava, the capital, and across Slovakia demanded the resignation of the government and a thorough investigation into the shooting deaths of 27-year old Kuciak and his girlfriend Martina Kusnirova, who was also 27.

The coalition party, known as Most-Hid, mostly represents ethnic-Hungarians in the country. The leader of the third coalition member, the Slovak National Party (SNS), said his party would want an early election if the coalition loses its majority in parliament. An early election could follow.

Technical Indicators in Focus - Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE: BMY)

Its leadership was to meet later Monday to discuss the broader political implications of the first killing of a journalist in Slovakia's history.

Bugar says Prime Minister Robert Fico rejected his party's proposal.

Fico's alleged link to the mafia was his close aide Maria Troskova, a former model and Miss Universe contestant who used to be close to businessman Antonino Vadala, one of the detained Italians.

If Fico can keep the coalition together, it is likely to still face a test as opposition parties are readying a no-confidence motion.

Both have resigned but deny links to the murder. They need 76 votes to topple the government, meaning defectors could be costly.

In the past, Kuciak had also written about a real-estate developer investigated for tax fraud who had business ties to Kalinak.
