Steven Spielberg has some opinions regarding Netflix films being nominated for Academy Awards.
However, notable film icon Steven Spielberg is not a staunch supporter of original films that are intended for streaming services, revealing how it "poses a clear and present danger to filmgoers". If it's a good show, you deserve an Emmy.
"It is a challenge to cinema", Spielberg says, acknowledging the threat posed by Netflix, which notched Oscar nods for Mudbound at this year's ceremony after a limited theatrical release.
The legendary director said in a recent interview that Netflix movies shouldn't qualify for Oscar nominations, even if they are screened in a traditional theater first. "There's better writing, better directing, better performances, better stories are being told".
Netflix original films are getting a lot of appreciation.
"And those smaller films that studios used to make routinely are now going to Amazon, Hulu, and Netflix".

Netflix bagged the Oscar for best documentary feature earlier this year for its doping film Icarus. They'll opt for the likes of Netflix or Amazon for release, perhaps after a brief theatrical stint. While the streaming giant went home with just one trophy, it managed to nab four Oscar nominations in total.
"He joins a list that includes Pedro Almodóvar, who lamented at last year's Cannes Film Festival that, in his opinion, movies that can not be seen on a "large screen" should not be rewarded, adding, "(Digital platforms) should not take the place of existing formats".
"Television is really thriving with quality and art", the director noted.
