There's a bit of a moral for our perpetually-connected society, and it's a relief to realize that this incarnation of Ready Player One isn't going to be entirely about its name-dropping. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is PG-13 - parents strongly cautioned.
Cinemablend, at a recent press day, asked Ready Player One script writer Zak Penn about the arduous task of sifting through all of the pop-culture references that he could, and couldn't use for the adaptation, as well as how to get the rights to various pieces of intellectual property. Bruce Wayne serves as a mentor or father figure for many people on this list and he would willingly lay down his life to defend any one of them. In other words, narcissism reigns supreme.
By the time we get to the Battle of Castle Anorak (Anorak being the name of the late Halliday's avatar), Parzival has rallied the entire Oasis - the entire world - to fight to keep their digital world pure. Be it Kaneda's bike from Akira, the original King Kong, The Shining or even Mechagodzilla, the film wastes no pop culture reference it actively employs with every single one of them and their players getting their time to shine.

And cleverly, in line with the book's popular culture references, the film itself is crammed with Easter eggs - as computer-game in-jokes are known - from iconic video games, comic books and films. But if you're asking us today, well, the answer is still no, but it's a more positive version.
The young hero at the centre of the story, underdog Wade Watts, is played by 21-year-old Tye Sheridan.
In the OASIS, there are solo players called "gunters" like Parzival and his VR-crush Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), who believe deeply in the game and its maker. But it isn't just individuals who seek to own the tech.

Additionally, Wade's friends Aech (Lena Waithe), Sho (Philip Zhao), and Daito (Win Morisaki) are wonderful characters who perhaps get less screen time than they deserve - and this lack is felt.
It unfolds like a mix of The Matrix and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. The rest of the movie is very good, but that scene is downright phenomenal. Still, word of mouth is sure to be what really drives interest in Ready Player One considering it's certified fresh with an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Actress Olivia Cooke, who stars as Art3mis/Samantha alongside Tye Sheridan's Parzival/Wade, picked Beetlejuice as her absolute favourite, despite it being a characteristically "blink-and-you'll miss it" moment. Spielberg's sci-fi fantasy initially offers relatively wholesome escapist fun.
So a race for the keys becomes a race for control, for survival, for friendship. Intense violence with gore, much stylized mayhem, brief sensuality and partial nudity, one use of profanity, occasional crude language.
