A trial date of August 6 was set, with proceedings expected to last between five and seven days, which means Stokes will miss the second Test against India at Lord's which begins on August 9.
The fight allegedly unfolded in the Clifton Triangle area of Bristol in the early hours of September 25 a year ago - several hours after England had played a one-day global against the West Indies in the city.
Stokes stands accused of affray, alongside two other men, Ryan Ali, 28, and Ryan Hale, 26.

Stokes was present in court to issue his not-guilty plea and confirm his identity as his trial preparation hearing got underway in Bristol. The case was prosecuted by Lucy Organ, with Gordon Cole QC defending Stokes.

Stokes, 26, wearing a grey shirt, confirmed his name, date of birth and nationality and said: "Thankyou" when the hearing concluded.
He told the three that they must be there in person for the trial, and would remain on bail.
The trial is expected to last between five and seven days and the trio are now on unconditional bail, allowing Stokes to play for England in New Zealand.
