"There is still time", WTO Director General Roberto Azevedo told the heads of WTO delegations at a closed-door meeting in Geneva. "We can not ignore this risk and I urge all parties to consider and reflect on this situation very carefully".
Mr Azevedo's warning was echoed by French president Emanuel Macron, who said yesterday the planned tariffs amounted to "economic nationalism" and that all sides would lose.
Azevedo, a former Brazilian trade envoy, on Friday said that he was "clearly concerned" about Trump's promised new tariffs - 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminium.
He called on the European Union to react "swiftly and proportionately" within the WTO.
Macron noted that Trump's plan amounted to "economic nationalism", which would lead to war and would be "a very bad response to the worldwide environment".
