Students lead rallies for gun control in US

Galvanized by a massacre at a Florida high school, hundreds of thousands of Americans are expected to take to the streets in cities across the United States on Saturday in the biggest protest for gun control in a generation.

Numerous activists - from Boston, its suburbs, MA and beyond - who descended upon the city were the same youths who lobbied lawmakers a little more than a week ago during a national day of activism held on the one-month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Garrido knew Helena Ramsay, 17, and Carmen Schentrup, 16, and Bayuk knew Jaime Guttenburg, 14, who were killed in last month's shooting.

Freshman Lexi Lampkin, one of the club's co-founders, emphasized the value of involving students in the protest and giving them an opportunity to speak out.

The crowd chanted "Never again", and "Everyday shootings are everyday problems".

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft lent his team's plane to Parkland students to travel to Washington. "I should be able to go to school and learn and not have to worry about someone coming in and shooting my school up". There they saw Florida school shooting survivor Emma Gonzalez stand silently on stage for more than six minutes.

"I know that my friends, if they had survived and other children had died, they would be here too", Garrido said.

March for Our Lives coordinator and Missouri Western State University Political Science Professor Melinda Kovas said the movement was centered around a desire for common sense gun reform. After the tragedy, Richardson, began volunteering and pushing for change, as well.

The March For Our Lives organizers' estimate attendance in D.C.to be around 850,000 people-well exceeding expectations.

Several celebrities and entertainers made appearances at the Washington event, including Demi Lovato, Ariana Grande and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Back at City Hall, marchers heard speakers, like Leunte Dean, who borrowed a famous theme from Martin Luther King Jr. "Thoughts and prayers are not enough to honor the victims of gun violence. It was a great crowd to be a part of", she added.

"I'm more so scared for my son than myself", Kelly said. Crowds in Chicago chanted "Fear has no place in our schools".

As a parent I feel awful for the kids that were killed.

Helena Ristic, 24, is originally from Serbia. But you don't say, "Hey there are 200 deaths from drinking and driving and now we take all the cars away from people".

"I think that's the most pathetic thing I've seen out of this, possibly even beating crisis actors".

Then the protesters, holding signs including "Enough is Enough", "We're the Change", "Gun violence hurts" and "I am a Teacher NOT a Security Guard", walked all the way to the midtown Manhattan.

Lots of children were there with their parents. Many held signs with slogans including "Am I Next?"

Cameron Kasky, a fellow student from Stoneman Douglas, said the rallies - including the Washington protest that filled streets around the US Capitol building - prompted many voter registrations and discussions.
