The report ranked Ozaukee County at the top while Menominee and Milwaukee counties were listed at the bottom.
The five counties in the poorest health are Bronx, Sullivan, Cattaraugus, Niagara and Chautauqua. Children in poverty are less likely to have access to well-resourced and quality schools and have fewer chances to be prepared for living wage jobs.
When focusing on crime, compared to each other the report takes data from 2012-2014 and shows Ingham County with the highest violent crime rate of 553 people out of 100,000. Fifteen percent of Hispanic children and 11 percent of black children live in poverty in Carver County, while only 2 percent of white children live in poverty.
"The 2018 County Health Rankings reflect the diligent efforts of many partner organizations in advancing health in our community", stated Dr. Richard Scott, Carver County Public Health Department manager, in the release.
"Is it healthy for us to have more convenient stores and liquor stores in a community than places for people to get food?"
The goal of the rankings project is to give communities a window into their own health and provide opportunities for improvement.
