Ta-Nehisi Coates Is Taking Over Captain America and We Can't Wait

Acclaimed writer Ta-Nehisi Coates, who has spent the past two years writing Black Panther for Marvel Comics, will take on Captain America in a new series for Marvel.

It's been a rough few years for Captain America. "Conspirators against him rank all the way up to the White House, causing Rogers to, at one point, reject the very title of Captain America", he continued.

Coates went into more detail about why he chose to take on writing Captain America in an essay at The Atlantic. "I'm not convinced I can tell a great Captain America story", Coates said in his Wednesday announcement, "which is precisely why I want so bad to try". While he's not finished writing stories about T'Challa and the rest of Wakanda, Coates revealed that his excitement to tackle the Steve Rogers character partially comes from a place of uncertainty. "I hope fans are excited to see something different, and I think there are some really compelling villains old school Captain America fans and Marvel fans will be familiar with". This is all good news, but what is also good news is that Captain America will not take the place of Black Panther on Coates slate.

Captain America #1 will be released, as it probably should be, on July 4. And why it scares the hell out of me, Coates confirms that starting this July he, along with Leinil Yu on interior art and Alex Ross on covers, will be the creative team behind the reboot of the patriotic superhero. "What is exciting is the possibility of exploration, of avoiding the repetition of a voice I've exhausted of".

In an essay for the Atlantic, where Coates serves as a national correspondent, the author of Between the World and Me explained his decision to write Captain America, the Marvel hero first conceived by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby in 1941. As expected, Coates will also continue writing "Black Panther". Alex Ross will provide covers.

Regardless, it was a pleasant surprise for fans of Coates's work and especially those who have enjoyed his stint writing Black Panther at Marvel during a time when the character's popularity was growing, building toward the release of what has become Marvel's latest blockbuster film - well on its way to earning a billion dollars worldwide.
