Penn State men's hockey Big Ten title hopes come to an end at Notre Dame; Lions now await NCAA fate
Having secured a bid with its conference championship, the Pirates were made a No. 8 seeds and will play at Notre Dame Tuesday at 9 p.m.
The first three rounds of the 2018 NIT will be played on the campuses of the higher-seeded teams (the only exception: No. 5 Washington will host No. 4 Boise State because Boise is an NCAA Tournament site).
The Owls (17-15) earned the No. 5 seed in their bracket, while Penn State (21-13) is the No. 4 seed.
Penn State advanced to the semifinals of the Big 10 tournament before losing 78-70 to Purdue.

Penn State hasn't played in the NCAA Tournament since 2011 and hasn't qualified under seven-year coach Pat Chambers.
Penn State might be a tad disappointed to be passed over by the NCAA tournament selection committee. "I think we'll fight, we'll compete, we'll scrap and we'll win a couple at the tournament. When you put us all together and we have all the pieces".
The MEAC is 3-12 all-time in the National Invitation Tournaments with wins coming in 2006 (Delaware State), 1995 (Coppin State) and 1974 (Maryland-Eastern Shore).
Led by guard Tony Carr, the Big Ten's leading scorer (19.9 points per game), Penn State will be considered a top NIT contender. The Nittany Lions reached the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational in 2014 following a 16-18 record. The NIT will conclude with the Championship game on Thursday, March 29.
This year the NIT will a number of new rules, including extending the three-point line approximately one foot and eight inches, the same distance used by FIBA for worldwide competition (22 feet, 1.75 inches).
