Texas Tech vs. Villanova, 3-25

Purdue NCAA Tournament Sweet 16

Having advanced further than any Texas Tech team ever has, the Red Raiders are one win away from returning to Texas for the Final Four.

The Texas Tech coach knocked the Boilermakers out of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, this time leading the third-seeded Red Raiders to a 78-65 victory to advance past the Sweet 16 for the first time in the basketball program's 93-year history. The Texas Tech Red Raiders were priced from +100 to +110 on the moneyline. Unfortunately for the Boilers, they went without a point for a 7:46 stretch at the same time.

This is his second season as Tech's head coach after 10 years as an assistant (2001-11).

The Red Raiders will vie for their first Final Four on Sunday afternoon against top-seeded Villanova, which beat West Virginia in the earlier game, 90-78. I also think Purdue has the better shooters if this game manages to turn into a shootout. The victor advances to the Final Four in San Antonio.

The Red Raiders shot 51.6 percent in the second half to reach the Elite Eight for the first time in school history.

In all the gritty, gutty stats, Tech held the upper hand. Both teams also had three-point victories in the previous round to advance, with Texas Tech defeating Florida and Purdue outlasting Butler.

Tech needed the bench production. Haas seemed to wince as well shooting a pregame layup.

Backup center Matt Haarms, despite being 7 foot 3 inches tall, never established presence and was constantly bumped out of the post by Tech's stronger big men.

The game is scheduled to start at about 9:57 p.m. ET (25 minutes after the conclusion of Villanova vs West Virginia, which starts at 7:27 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast nationally on TBS. He's put up 18.2 points per game to go with 3.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists a contest.

Chris Beard has done it to Purdue again.

Texas Tech, making its first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 2005, had lost all five of its previous trips to the regional semifinals. The Red Raiders have had a good run, but the Wildcats have really played well in the tournament and have won all three of their games by at least 12 points and I see them winning this one by double-figures as well. Vincent Edwards and Thompson had 12 points and 10 points, respectively, and were the only Purdue players with more than four points.
