Ethiopia's Command Post to probe recent killing of 9 civilians by soldiers

Soldiers opened fire on the civilians near the town of Moyale on the southern border with Kenya after mistaking them for members of the banned Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) who were attempting to sneak into the country, Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported.

The deaths of nine civilians in Ethiopia's restive Oromia region, home to its largest ethnic group, was due to an accidental shooting by soldiers, state media said Sunday.

An inquiry has been launched and the soldiers involved in the killings have been kept in custody.

The Oromia state's communication bureau told Anadolu Agency that a team was dispatched to track and help the people who fled the area to Kenya.

At least 2,000 Ethiopian asylum seekers have fled to the north Kenyan town of Moyale, the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) said yesterday.

Severity of Flu Season Passes Peak but Remains Deadly

The asylum seekers, majority of them being women and children, began streaming into Kenya on Saturday night, KRCS said.

Red Cross said the displaced people were hosted in four centres - Butiye, Somare, Cifa and Sessi.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has resigned last month saying he had done what he was able to do to solve the problem in the country.

Ethiopia has been experiencing anti-government protests since 2016, mostly in the Oromia and Amhara region.
