Death toll increases to 53 in Russia shopping mall fire, more than dozen missing
NPR's Lucian Kim reports from Moscow that numerous city's residents believe that the authorities are lying about the death toll - that it is actually much higher than reported.
How many died and why?
Fire alarms had not sounded, and staff were reportedly nowhere to be seen as the blaze took hold at the Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo, a city in Siberia, about 1,900 miles east of Moscow, according to witnesses.
On Tuesday thousands of people gathered in Moscow and other cities to mourn the victims and vent their anger at the authorities after children were trapped in a locked cinema as the inferno spread through the mall.
But many observers said the Kremlin's reaction was insufficient and belated.
There was no immediate indication of the cause of the fire. The hired security for the mall were also not licensed members of any registered organization, Russia's private security guards' union said.
"What's happening here? This isn't war, it's not an unexpected methane explosion at a coal mine".

First Qatar referee to officiate at FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation
England's Howard Webb was Britain's sole representative at the last two World Cups in 2010 and 2014. Mark Clattenburg lost his opportunity to referee at the World Cup after venturing to Saudi Arabia.
On Tuesday, Kemerovo residents packed the main square in a rare protest, some holding placards and shouted slogans calling for the sacking of Tuleyev and Putin.
Local officials who appeared in front of the angry crowd tried to voice similar views to little avail as, in one instance, the vice governor of the region Sergey Tsivilyev asked a protester with a microphone to calm down and not engage in "self-PR".
Russian Federation has launched safety investigations at shopping malls across the nation in the wake of a massive fire that killed scores of children and adults in Siberia.
Shtengelov promised to pay a compensation of 3 million rubles (about $52,500) to the family of each victim.
On Monday morning, Kemerovo residents were bringing flowers, candles and stuffed animals to a plaza outside the mall, and local hospitals reported an influx of people wanting to donate blood for the victims. Aside from the outpour of grief on social media, many Russians have ridiculed what they perceive to be poor accountability and lax enforcement of safety rules.
Four people have already been detained, including two employees of the firm that services the mall's fire alarm. According to the Interfax news agency, police have permission to keep him in custody for another 72 hours, as investigators determine who is at fault for the deaths.
The bodies of all 64 victims have been recovered and no one is unaccounted-for, Deputy Emergency Situations Minister Vladlen Aksyonov told the RIA Novosti news agency.
