Many Democrats in Congress expressed dismay at Tillerson's firing, saying the change would sow more instability in the administration at a crucial time.

Pompeo would need to be confirmed by the Senate.

Trump told reporters Tuesday that he made the decision "by myself" and said the two were "talking about this for a long time". "When you look at the Iran deal, I think it's awful and he thinks it's okay", Trump said. "I actually got along well with Rex, but really it was a different mindset, it was a different thinking".

Trump conceded Tuesday that he and Tillerson often were not on the same page.

"I had a very good conversation with Director Pompeo this morning and look forward to meeting with him soon", Corker said in a statement.

Some national security insiders, meanwhile, have mused during recent months that Mr. Pompeo might be a stronger fit for secretary of state because of his focus on the North Korea crisis.

Over months of speculation about Tillerson's future, Haley had been rumored as one possible successor.

The Washington Post reported Trump asked Tillerson to step down last Friday.

The president is adding that Tillerson will be "much happier now", and he appreciates his service.

While Tillerson has been critical of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential campaign and its intervention from Ukraine to Syria, Pompeo has at times bolstered Trump's view that inquiries into Russian election meddling is a "witch hunt" meant to undercut his presidency.

Tillerson was slated to retire from Exxon in March 2017 at age 65 under the company's mandatory retirement policy.
