President Donald Trump is still in touch Rob Porter, the aide fired over allegations of domestic abuse, and wishes that he could return to the White House, the New York Times reported Monday night.

Porter, 40, abruptly stepped down on February 7 amid disturbing claims that he had emotionally and physically abused his two ex-wives.

The Times sources say Trump has told some advisers that he while he knows he can not bring Porter back, he hoped his ex-staffer would return to the White House. Sources told the Times that Trump considers Porter to be one of those people.

As the Times reports the president is aware he "cannot bring" Porter back to the White House but "misses the staff structure" of which Porter played an internal role.

In the phone calls they have had since Porter left, the pair have reportedly discussed trade and the China tariff's Trump announced last week. Hick and Porter had recently been revealed to be dating, which may have prompted the Porter abuse story.

Another ex wife, Colbie Holderness, told The Intercept that Porter threw her down on a bed and punched her in the face during an argument.

"He says he's innocent, and I think you have to remember that".

A White House spokesman did not return a request for comment from the Daily News.

Ex-staff secretary Rob Porter reminds President Trump he had a bill to sign after he departed quickly following remarks at his golf estate in New Jersey last summer. He said very strongly yesterday that he's innocent'.

The situation also thrust Chief of Staff John Kelly into the spotlight for how he handled the news, claiming to White House staff that he had immediately called for Porter's dismissal when he discovered the news.

At a Senate hearing in February, FBI Director Chris Wray indicated their accounts of abuse were standing in the way of Porter obtaining a security clearance. The uproar over him being allowed access to classified material led to the White House to put a halt to people working with temporary clearances and Kushner-who had been granted similar, temporary access-losing his clearance.
