U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly warned Russian President Vladimir Putin by phone that he would win a possible nuclear arms race, amid deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two countries. The network also reported the Russian president's display of weaponry "really got under the president's skin".
Thursday's report echoes another explosive threat made by the president after he tweeted in January that his "nuclear button" was "much bigger & more powerful" than North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's.
The source said that he believed Putin's response to Trump's statement was positive and that that the conversation was not determined to have inflamed tensions further. The president reportedly ignored explicit, all-caps instructions from his aides to not congratulate Putin on his re-election, and he declined to discuss Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election or criticize the nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in England.
On Monday, in response to the nerve attack in England that killed a British spy, Trump expelled 60 Russian diplomats from the USA and closed a base in Washington state.

Reacting to news of the leak and seemingly pushing back on criticism of his move to praise Putin, Trump explained that his desire to cool tensions with Russian Federation was in large part due to his hopes to solve problems such as "the coming Arms Race". President Trump also remarked that he hoped the simulations Putin showed were election rhetoric and nothing more serious emanating from Russian Federation, reported Reuters.
Behind the scenes, President Donald Trump is taking a bit of a tougher stance on Russian Federation, facing off with President Vladimir Putin, according to sources who spoke with NBC News.
