Flu deaths in North Carolina have well surpassed those from all of last season, according to numbers released on Thursday.
The flu has now been downgraded from widespread to regional. That's down from 340 the week prior.
During the most recent weekly flu surveillance, which runs through February 24, DPH reported that about 12 percent of hospital emergency room visits are assocaited with the flu, down from 14 percent the previous three "peak weeks". "This has been a brutal flu season and while it has likely peaked, it isn't over".
Health department epidemiologist Karin Martin declined to say whether the kids who have died had been vaccinated against the flu.
Since late August, 105 deaths have been attributed to the flu (80 associated with influenza A, 25 with influenza B).
Part of the problem is that this year the flu vaccine is protecting only one-third of people who got the shot. By comparison, the state reported 59 flu-related deaths in the 2015-16 flu season.

Both flu victims reportedly had underlying medical conditions.
The best defense against the flu is to get the flu vaccine.
Multiple flu infections in the same person are rare but not unheard of.
Each year, officials with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention try to determine the viruses that should be included in the vaccine, but it is not foolproof.
"Sometimes people will need to go to the emergency room to see a doctor right away due to the flu virus", Bocchini said.
