Victims in fatal East River helicopter crash identified
The fatal New York City helicopter crash that killed everyone on board except the pilot may have been caused by a passenger's piece of luggage, the pilot told investigators. A bystander also filmed the crash, showing the Liberty Helicopters craft sinking slowly into the river.
He said the pilot escaped the downed aircraft nearly immediately because he was able to unbuckle his front-facing seat belt. "After a back injury that kept him from flying for the Army, he found Northeast Helicopters and never looked back".
It is one of the maddening paradoxes of New York City's recent political history that Mayor Bill de Blasio came to power with a righteous rage to ban horse-carriages in Central Park (a prohibition he ultimately failed to enact), but he has shown no fury - or any real sign of displeasure - over a much more risky and environmentally damaging means of vehicular tourism, sightseeing by helicopter.
The pilot of the helicopter, Richard Vance, was the only survivor. "He's a true f-- pilot, so just let him be", Anthony Vance said. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident and is slated to provide an update on the crash late Monday afternoon.
It remains unclear whether the helicopter experienced mechanical problems after takeoff, or if the harnesses and the floating devices were working properly.

At least one lawmaker has called on the FAA to suspend Liberty Helicopters flights until the facts of the crash are known.
