UConn moves to fire basketball coach Kevin Ollie
UConn will probably argue an NCAA investigation into Ollie's recruiting practices justifies the firing.
Kevin Ollie, UConn's National Championship-winning wunderkind, the hand-picked successor to Jim Calhoun and once the hottest name in the coaching market has been fired by the Huskies.
The University of CT issued a statement today saying they were moving to terminate men's basketball coach Kevin Ollie. The exact nature of the investigation has not yet been released. Coach Kevin Ollie is in the second year of a five-year $17.9-million contract that can be voided for "just cause".
The school cited disciplinary reasons and "just cause" for the move, which comes as the program is being investigated by the NCAA.
Ollie's teams have missed the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years after winning the title in 2014 with the likes of Shabazz Napier and Ryan Boatwright.

Ollie played at UConn from 1991 through 1995 and, after a 13-year National Basketball Association career, he returned to the program as an assistant in 2010 before taking over as head coach following Jim Calhoun's retirement in 2012.
"It is unfortunate that this decision became necessary".
"With regard to the inquiry directed at our men's basketball program, I want to express that we will cooperate fully with NCAA as this process moves forward as we are committed to promoting an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA regulations", Ollie said in a late-January statement. It capped another disappointing year for the program, with a 14-18 overall record and a 7-11 mark in conference.
"The men's basketball program has a proud history and a tradition of excellence", university president Susan Herbst said.
