The Trump administration announced extensive sanctions against Russia on Thursday morning, which included sanctions on the Internet Research Agency, a Russian troll farm that produced divisive political posts on American social media platforms during the 2016 presidential election.

The officials say the Russians obtained access to the energy system and "conducted network reconnaissance" of industrial control systems that run United States factories and the electricity grid.
Britain, France, Germany and the United States condemned the attack on the Russian ex-spy and his daughter, saying there was "no plausible alternative explanation" to Moscow's involvement.

Those attacks have been known to the US government for more than a year, but kept highly classified.
Among those affected were Yevgeny Prigozhin, who is known as "Putin's chef" and who ran the St. Petersburg-based Internet Research Agency, and 12 of the agency's employees.
The Russian agency "tampered with, altered or caused a misappropriation of information with the goal or effect of interfering with or undermining election processes and institutions", specifically the 2016 USA presidential race, the US said.
