Pakistan's bid to enter the elite Nuclear Supplier's group suffered a big jolt as the Trump administration added seven of its firms to a list of entities that pose a significant threat to the United States by indulging in nuclear trade.

Entities on this list - businesses, research institutions, government and private organisations, individuals - are required to seek a licence from the U.S. government to purchase items subjected to EAR, which, it is generally presumed, will be denied to them.

The Ministry of Defence has conveyed to the Dubai-based former president through his counsel that providing him security is not its job, the Dawn newspaper reported. There are in all 23 firms in the list that also includes 15 from South Sudan, a country rocked by serious domestic violence.

Two were found procuring supplies for nuclear-related entities already on the list, and two others are suspected to be fronts for already-listed entities.

The End-user Review Committee (ERC) of the US Department of Commerce determined that Mushko Logistics Pvt. Ltd., Solutions Engineering, Akhtar & Munir, Proficient Engineers and Pervaiz Commercial Trading Co. Ltd and Pakistan-baed Mushko Electronics Pvt. (PCTC) Pakistan be added to the list due to "involvement in activities contrary to USA national security and foreign policy interests". Ltd.be added to the list for assisting Pakistani entities in circumventing U.S. restrictions.

Relations between U.S. and Pakistan have been strained since President Trump announced his new Asia policy, especially asking Islamabad to do more to destroy terror havens on its soil and giving more important role to India in Afghanistan.

Pakistan applied for the NSG membership last May after India had found active support from the United States and other Western countries to join the group.

The visa bans that are now being discussed would be aimed at individual members of the Pakistani government, military, or ISI intelligence service who may be behind the support to terrorists like the Taliban and Haqqani Network to continue operating from Pakistani soil.

Although China and Turkey have cited procedural issues in adding new members to the NSG, both have underlined the right of Pakistan to aspire to become a member of the club, which works on the principle of consensus to accept new members. It has also attempted to advance its case for NSG membership by saying that its a responsible country.
