The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says 72 people have died of Lassa fever since January 1, 2018.

The states are Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Imo, Plateau, Lagos, Taraba, Delta, Osun, Rivers, FCT, Gombe and Ekiti.

Worst-hit by the virus is Edo state, in the south, where Crusoe Osagie, a media aide to the state government, said mostly rural areas were affected.

The agency in its weekly epidemiological report for Week 5 said 193 cases have been confirmed positive to the Lassa fever virus giving a case fatality rate of 23.9 per cent.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said it is teaming up with national and global health agencies to tackle what has been noted to be the country's biggest outbreak.

But in an update, the NCDC said: "Since the onset of the 2018, 325 cases have been classified as: 317 confirmed cases, eight probable cases with 72 deaths".

The WHO said a total of 2,845 people who have come into contact with patients have been identified and are being monitored.

Health workers are most times secondary victims who get infected while treating patients with the disease. The health care workers working in these centers are trained in standard infection control and prevention (IPC) as well as use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

According to the NCDC, Irrua Specialist Hospital, Edo, has 42 cases on admission while FMC Owo, Ondo, has 21 isolation beds, all occupied. Health officials are also conducting surveillance and contact tracing, along with laboratory testing and what WHO is calling community engagement.

The Director-General however reiterated an earlier appeal to the public to observe high environmental hygiene, to prevent the breeding of rodents, especially rats, who were the carriers of the virus, from entering their homes to contaminate food and other liquids, and to be extremely cautious getting into contact with their droplets and urine.

As the outbreak continues with more states reporting confirmed cases, NCDC also encourages all states to set up state-level EOC for proper and better management response activities.

A year ago cases of this viral infection were reported in Nigeria and Togo in the West African sub region prompting Ghana to issue a health alert to that effect. Health care workers seeing a patient suspected to have Lassa fever should immediately contact local and national experts for guidance and to arrange for laboratory testing.
