Trump Administration Blames Russia for Cyberattacks Targeting Energy Grid
A former senior DHS official familiar with the government response to the campaign said that Russia's targeting of infrastructure networks dropped off after the publication in the fall of Symantec's research and an October government alert, which detailed technical forensics about the hacking attempts but did not name Russian Federation.
The DHS alert was released as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin was announcing new sanctions against 19 Russians allegedly involved in cyberattacks on the USA, including 13 whom special counsel Robert Mueller indicted last month for meddling in the 2016 election.
The United States for the first time is blaming the Russian government for an ongoing campaign of cyberattacks that it says is targeting the US power grid, water systems, and other critical infrastructure.
The allegations about Russian hacking of the USA power grid comes as a result of a joint Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) analysis effort. The alert says the hackers also used created administrator accounts on local machines that were disguised to appear legitimate.
Prigozhin tells the state RIA Novosti news agency that he's not anxious by the USA sanctions list. Russian Federation denies trying to hack into other countries' systems.
The officials say the Russians obtained access to the energy system and "conducted network reconnaissance" of industrial control systems that run US factories and the electricity grid.
Prigozhin has been called the "chef" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russia's deputy foreign minister, Sergei Ryabkov, says the Kremlin is responding calmly to the new sanctions and - in his words - "taking this in our stride".

The sanctions are the first use of the new powers that Congress passed a year ago to punish Moscow for meddling in an election that Trump won over Democrat Hillary Clinton.
"These targeted sanctions are a part of a broader effort to address the ongoing nefarious attacks emanating from Russian Federation".
Altogether, 19 Russians were cited. The administration is also targeting the Internet Research Agency that Mueller says orchestrated much of the cybermeddling in the presidential election.
Thursday's action freezes any assets the individuals and entities may have in the United States and bars Americans from doing business with them. But it did attribute those attacks to Russian Federation - at first.
The Treasury Department said the GRU and Russia's military both interfered in the 2016 election and were "directly responsible" for the NotPetya cyberattack that hit businesses across Europe in June 2017, causing billions of dollars in damage by disrupting global shipping, trade and medicine production.
The Russian government says it's preparing to retaliate after new USA sanctions against Moscow for allegedly interfering in the 2016 American presidential election.
"The IRA created and managed a vast number of fake online personas that posed as legitimate US persons to include grass-roots organizations, interest groups and a state political party on social media", the Treasury Department statement said. Bloomberg News reported in July that Russian hackers had breached more than a dozen power plants in seven states, an aggressive campaign that has since expanded to dozens of states, according to a person familiar with the investigation. Many cyber security experts and former US officials say such behavior is generally espionage-oriented with the potential, if needed, for sabotage.
