Regulators at the Federal Communications Commission issued the approval late Thursday, saying it was the first time the agency had approved a US -licensed satellite operation using the broadband technology.

The proposed system will use 4,425 satellites.

Elon Musk's private spaceflight company intends to put 4,425 low-flying satellites in orbit around the earth, flying at between 684 and 823 miles up.

SpaceX said it appreciated the FCC's thorough review of its constellation license.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment. SpaceX's first satellites are expected to come online next year.

A profile of the company in the Wall Street Journal previous year revealed that SpaceX is "putting steep revenue expectations on a nascent satellite-internet business it hopes will eventually dwarf the rocket division and help finance its goal of manned missions to Mars".

The FCC said SpaceX has been granted authority to use frequencies in the Ka (20/30 GHz) and Ku (11/14 GHz) bands.

It will probably be a long time before SpaceX boots up the internet service, Mashable reports, and SpaceX has only launched two demo satellites so far.

SpaceX wanted to create a "global communications system" that Musk compared to "rebuilding the internet in space".

SpaceX hopes the Starlink constellation will be able to achieve a latency of as low as 25 milliseconds, which is on par with DSL connections but not as fast as direct-to-home fiber speeds. With coverage from space, internet service providers can build towers that beam signals from SpaceX satellites instead of installing pricey broadband cables.

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat, said on Thursday that the agency needs "to prepare for the proliferation of satellites in our higher altitudes".
