US ambassador to Mexico to step down in May
The United States ambassador to Mexico is stepping down this spring amid tense relations between the two countries over President Trump's vow to build a wall on the border. It said three days later, it received an official request to approve the appointment of a new ambassador, which it granted Monday.
According to the Mexican newspaper Reforma (in Spanish), Trump would have nominated former General Motors CEO Edward Whitacre Jr.as Jacobson's successor and would be waiting for his confirmation.
Former President Barack Obama named Jacobson to the post in 2015, but a bitter partisan dispute in Congress meant almost 11 months elapsed before she was confirmed.
Mexico's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told them about Jacobson's resignation on February 17.
Jacobson began her career at the State Department as a White House management fellow. However, she faced opposition from some lawmakers who disagreed with her role in improving U.S. -Cuba relations.
Mr. Trump's election abruptly changed the generally warm relations that the United States had developed with Mexico over the last 25 years - ones that Mrs. Jacobson had helped foster through much of her career.
Jacobson was not in her post long before relations between Washington and Mexico City became strained under President Donald Trump.
"Jacobson previously served as assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere affairs and in numerous other posts and is seen having a deep knowledge of Latin America and especially Mexico". "She was just focusing on what could be achieved, not getting into the noise of the relationship, actually just focusing on bringing the two countries together".

An official press release from the Mexican government has stated that "it is the responsibility of the U.S. government to inform the public about who has been assigned to direct its embassy in Mexico", The Hill reported. It also leaves the US without an ambassador-level representative in another key diplomatic post on top of vacancies in equally important embassies including South Korea, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
The resignation comes at a time of heightened tensions between the USA and Mexico.
Speculation about the identity of Jacobson's replacement has started to mount.
