Venus Williams advances to the last eight in Indian Wells

Kastakina won five of her six break point opportunities in a dominant performance.

The Russian has knocked out US Open champion Sloane Stephens and No 2-ranked Caroline Wozniacki along the way.

The 20-year-old Kasatkina, who has beaten all four reigning Grand Slam champions in the past year, continued her giant-killing form with a 6-4, 7-5 shock victory over world No. 2 Wozniacki.

"This was my first breakout tournament when I was 16 so to come back and get closer to hopefully a title, it's like a dream come true", said Venus, who was taught the game by her father on the courts of Compton, California.

Germany's Kerber is definitely in that elite class.

Evergreen veterans Roger Federer and Venus Williams have both reached their respective semifinals in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

Kasatkina improved to 11-6 on the WTA Tour season as she seeks to better her quarter-final appearance here in 2016.

NCAA men's basketball tournament at a glance
Tennessee could have a trick matchup in the second round, as it will face the victor of No. 6 Miami versus No. 11 Loyola-Chicago. Trae Young had 28 points and seven assists in Oklahoma's 83-78 overtime loss to Rhode Island in the tournament's first round.

Kasatkina said she tries not to take any opponent for granted, especially a former world number one like Kerber.

Kasatkina said she is trying to stay humble and not get caught up in her recent success. I don't want people to think that I'm somebody really special, because I'm just a normal human which loves football, which loves good food, you know. Venus also usually plays her best on American soil.

For the first time in three appearances in Indian Wells Kasatkina advances to the semis where she will face seven-time Grand Slam victor Venus Williams.

Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro has said she could only put up minimal resistance to American Venus Williams in their quarter-final match at the Indian Wells tennis tournament.

They have played twice before in 2016 with Williams winning at Wimbledon, 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 and Kasatkina winning another tough three setter in Auckland, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-3. Anisimova, a 16-year-old wild card, won her first three WTA Tour matches at Indian Wells, including against two-time Wimbledon victor Petra Kvitova, without dropping a set.

"I had been hoping for such a victory for a long time", she said. "It is about enjoying every second on the court". The way she handled a vicious forehand from Kerber by slice-returning on the backhand, was probably the shot of the match.

"From my side I was not able to play my game like I played the last few weeks", she said. "I make a lot of mistakes, easy ones, and not my day at the end".
