NY Congresswoman Louise Slaughter dies at 88 following fall
"At this hard time, I want to first and foremost express my deepest condolences to Congresswoman Louise Slaughter's family".
Slaughter was serving her 16th term in Congress and was the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee.
Slaughter also co-authored the landmark Violence Against Women Act, which has helped reduce cases of domestic violence by 67 percent since 1994. She supported rewriting NAFTA. Prior to her push, the clinical trials at NIH focused on white men. Rep. Slaughter pushed for several prominent pieces of legislation such as the Genetic Information and Non-Discrimination Act. The objective of the measure is to provide privacy protections for genetic information and prevent employers from using the data to discriminate against employees or job applicants. And she sponsored the STOCK Act, which prohibits insider trading by members of Congress.
Slaughter often boasted she was the only microbiologist in Congress.
Slaughter died at George Washington University Hospital in Washington after an injury sustained in her home last week, Liam Fitzsimmons said in a statement. She had deep convictions - on both issues important to the people of Rochester, and for the integrity and honesty of the political system.

Funeral arrangements haven't been announced.
