Vodafone Germany has teamed with Nokia to build the first 4G network on the moon.
The rovers will be used to send back data and live stream video of the lunar surface - in glorious HD, mind - to the Earth-based scientists.
The vehicles are expected to be launched this year from Cape Canaveral in Florida, travelling 238,900 miles in the Autonomous Landing and Navigation Module (ALINA) - a private spacecraft created to be compatible with commercial launch vehicles such as SpaceX's Falcon 9. And the high-profile corporate partnerships must be very handy for the Berlin-based PTScientists, which once hoped to win Google's Lunar XPrize (GLXP) challenge. The Mission to the Moon by PTScientists is set to launch next year and it will be the first privately-funded Moon landing.
Science headlines are regularly filled with stories about new discoveries on Mars, observations of Jupiter and Saturn, and even stunning revelations about far-away exoplanets that mankind will probably never have a chance to visit, but Earth's moon rarely gets the same kind of attention.
The role that each company will play is particular but together they complete the mission.

If fairings can be recovered, that could save millions of dollars per launch. Friday's launch is the first of two planned by SpaceX in the next four days.

Vodaphone Germany, Nokia, and Audi are working on a mobile network and robotic vehicles that are part of a private expedition to the moon, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary year of the first manned lunar landing.
The 4G network will be based on the Ultra Compact Network, less than 2.2-lb.
The plan is to use the network to fire high-definition video from the Moon's surface back to space nerds back on Earth, rather than enable visiting aliens to snap pics of their galactic brunch on their ETPhone and upload them to Interstellargram. The rovers will need to be able to communicate with one another, and the partners claim a 4G mobile network will be a lot more energy-efficient than analog radio.
The networking equipment will be launched into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and has been created to be incredibly small.
The rovers will be studying NASA's Apollo 17 lunar roving vehicle that was used in 1972 by the last astronauts to walk on the moon. India's " "4G networks lacked the capacity to deliver connection speeds much faster than 3G technologies", states the OpenSignal report.
